Science fiction writer Arthur C Clarke once said, “Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic”. After a few weeks with a 3D printer, I’m inclined to agree. 3D printing is about as close as you can get to magic in the real world. Being able to download a virtual widget and transform it into a solid object is also becoming increasingly affordable thanks to the XYZ 3D printers very reasonable sticker price. HOW 3D PRINTING WORKS Where inkjets printers use ink, the XYZ printer uses a reel of ABS plastic cord (known as filament) as its “ink”. The ABS filament looks similar to the cord used on weed-eaters. The plastic filament is fed into a print head, which heats and melts it to deposit a fine coat of plastic on a layer-by-layer basis.
