3D printing helps 13-month-old leave hospital for the first time in her life

A little girl who was born in Lancaster County and spent the first 13 months of her life in a hospital was discharged this week thanks to a technological first, according to Penn State Children’s Hospital. Born without a trachea — which is commonly called a windpipe — Ramiah Martin received an implant created with 3D printing technology. “When she was born, she looked blue and wasn’t crying,” Ramiah’s mother, Leanne Martin, was quoted as saying in a news release. Her condition is caused by a rare developmental abnormality and called tracheal agenesis. Ramiah is now among very few children worldwide to survive with the condition, the release said, noting that medical publications report only one other survivor in the United States.
